It's core engineering technology areas include: propulsion and machinery systems including diesel engines, boilers, gas turbines and power transmission; shipboard electric power systems; auxiliary equipmant and fluid systems; submarine life support systems; air conditioning, refrigeration, heating, and ventilation systems; machinery automation and controls; shipboard control system networks; ship handling and deck machinery; cargo/weapons handling and stowage systems; machinery silencing; and the development and maintenance of the logistics technical documentation that support these systems. The core technologies being developed and transitioned to future Navy ships and submairnes by machinery research includes integrated surface and undersea power systems; advanced energy storage and management systems; advanced thermal and auxililary systems; and advanced machinery automation and control concepts. NSWC-CD Philadelphia has more than 100 test sites and laboratories; including three full-scale ship propulsion systems. The 1,600 government civilian scientiests, engineers, and staff of NSWC-CD Philadelphia are located within the former Philadelphia Navy Yard. This 1,200 acre site is undergoing a dynamic revitalization by the City of Philadelphia, and is already the headquarters site for a private shipbuilding company, a private retail merchandizer, a major pharmaceuticals company, a university consortium improving the energy efficiency of buildings, amd more than 100 other companies.
