The Naval Air Station Patuxent River was commissioned on April 1st 1943 and has been actively involved in all aspects of Naval Aviation from basic research to flight test since its inception. In 1945 the Naval Air Test Center was established followed by the establishment of the U. S. Navy Test Pilot School in 1948. In 1992 the Naval Air Station was reorganized as the Naval Air Warfare Center Division (NAWCAD) and became the home of Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR).

NAWCAD has been labeled the busiest Test Center in the world and is one of two product centers within the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR). NAVAIR, working with industry, delivers high quality, affordable products and support to the operating forces while providing total life cycle support of all naval aviation systems from research and engineering to design to development, and acquisition. The test and evaluation; training facilities and equipment; repair and modification; and in-service engineering and logistics support are considered world class. As one of the three principal stakeholders in the Naval Aviation Enterprise (NAE), NAVAIR is responsible for the full development, acquisition, and life-cycle management of fixed and rotary wing aviation platforms.
