The 96th Test Group is comprised of several world-unique squadrons specializing in the test and evaluation of weapons systems. The Detachment 2, National Radar Cross-selection Test Facility, specializes in measuring radar cross-sections and antenna patterns. The 846th Test Squadron test systems on a ten mile long rocket sled track for applications in pilot egress, missile threat detection, kinetic energy kill vehicles, warheads, penetrators, armor, radomes, guidance system characterization, projectile trajectory measurement, and environmental erosion effects. The 746th Test Squadron is the Central Inertial and GPS Test Facility where next generation guidance and navigation systems are tested and evaluated for performance in realistic navigation warfare environments. The 586th Test Squadron provides flight test support for DoD users including test design and integration with the various aircraft.

Holloman AFB is located in beautiful southern New Mexico in a high desert basin containing the White Sands National Monument and is surrounded by the Sacramento and Organ mountain ranges. The small town environment, low cost of living, moderate annual temperatures and ready access to outdoor recreation make this an ideal location to experience the desert Southwest.

SMART scholars will intern in the various squadrons and flights that utilize STEM skills. Upon graduation the scholar will be placed in the organization where the best match is found. Organization functions where STEM personnel work are: test planning, test execution, mechanical design and analysis, aerodynamic analysis, circuit design and analysis, instrumentation, test software development, environmental lab test conduct, pallet design and fabrication, project management and new capability acquisition.
