53rd Electronic Warfare Group, Air Combat Command (53 EWG-ACC)
Service or Branch: Air Force
Location: Eglin Air Force Base, FL
STEM Fields: Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer and Computational Sciences, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering53d Electronic Warfare Group/Partner Support Laboratory (53EWG/PSL) supports the foreign partner nations in the F-35 program by providing support in the development and testing of mission data. Current supported nations include Australia, Italy, Norway and the United Kingdom, with potential to support others in the future. Mission data is what makes the advanced aircraft sensors capable of interpreting and responding to the environment, which effectively gives the aircraft its combat capability. Mission data engineers take information from various sources, including the intelligence community, and modify it based on their understanding of how the complex aircraft systems work into a format that the aircraft can utilize. The engineers will make decisions on priority where conflicts exist based on user requirements. Test engineers will develop and execute a plan to ensure the mission data meets requirements via testing in a hardware-in-the-loop laboratory. The lab basically consists of primary mission equipment from the aircraft, with stimulators providing a virtual testing environment and an overall computer system running a scenario which has also been developed by the test engineers of the 53EWG/PSL.
