STEM Fields: Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering

A typical Air Force installation consists of operational facilities (e.g., hangars, flightlines), training facilities, support facilities, housing, and base-wide infrastructure (e.g., utility systems). It also includes natural infrastructure assets, such as air, space, land, and water resources. Installation engineering squadrons maintain the installation by the planning, acquiring, building, sustaining, managing, operating, and divesting of both natural and manmade infrastructure. These squadrons ensure installations have the natural infrastructure to support current and future missions and to maintain compliance with environmental requirements. To complete their mission, installation engineering squadrons at Air Force bases encompass a variety of occupational areas including engineering disciplines, architects, realty specialists, housing managers, environmental professionals, financial managers, biologists, firefighters, electricians, carpenters, painters, and more.

The mission of the 2d Engineer Squadron is to protect, maintain, and improve the 949 facilities worth $4.5 billion on 22,000 acres at Barksdale Air Force Base. The squadron provides fire and environmental protection, disaster preparedness, and explosives disposal. They train and equip 400 personnel to support operations and worldwide contingencies and administer $37 million in contracts and operations and maintenance initiatives. Barksdale Air Force Base is located in northwest in Bossier Parish. The installation is just east of the Red River and adjacent to a large urban region comprised of the twin cities. Barksdale Air Force Base is the home of the Eighth Air Force Headquarters, Global Strike Command (GSC), and the 2d Bomb Wing which is the largest bomber unit in GSC. The Eighth Air Force Headquarters is responsible for the direct deployment of over 250 bomber, fighter, and transport aircraft. In addition to 11 active duty locations, the Eighth Air Force oversees 27 Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve units in 16 states, as well as 10 mobile Air Combat Command units in 6 states.

The 2d Bomb Wing is the host unit at Barksdale Air Force Base and has operated there since 1963. As the largest bomb wing in GSC, the wing controls B-52H Stratofortress Bombers assigned to three squadrons. These squadrons train combat aircrews, maintain combat readiness to support ground commanders in worldwide theater contingency operations, and support the Air Force's deterrent role by standing ready to strike specified targets. The wing maintains a state of constant readiness to conduct strategic bombardment operations on a global scale and continues to reflect the heritage of its motto “Liberty We Defend.” The primary function of the base is to operate and maintain the aircraft. Major support operations include maintenance of aircraft, aerospace ground equipment, ground vehicles and facilities. These operations involve activities such as corrosion control, non-destructive inspection, fuel cell maintenance, engine maintenance, hydraulics, and wheel and tire maintenance.
